Sir Trevor Brooking CBE (Chairman)

Sir Trevor Brooking has been a Trustee of The Butler Trust since 1986. He retired from professional football in 1984 after a career spanning almost 20 years playing for West Ham United and England. After retiring he regularly commentated on football matches for BBC TV and radio and wrote a weekly column in the Evening Standard. He also coached youth football and became heavily involved in sports promotional work. He was Chairman of the Eastern Regional Council for Sport and Recreation for 10 years (1987-1997) and Chairman of Sport England from 1999 – 2002. In November 2003 he took up a new post as Director of Football Development at the Football Association.

Mr Julian Avery

Julian joined The Butler Trust as Trustee in 2005. After spending a number of years with the Lloyds Bank Group as a qualified solicitor, Julian then moved to Wellington Underwriting as Director and then moved up to Chief Executive in 2000. Along with various other non-executive appointments, he is the Director of St. Michael’s Hospice, Hastings, and Strategic Advisor to the Sussex Police Force.

Mr Oliver Brannigan CBE

Oliver Brannigan became a Trustee in June 2003 after retiring from a lengthy career in the Probation Service. He joined the Northern Ireland Probation Service as a Probation Officer in 1972. He rose through the ranks to Assistant Chief Probation Officer in 1982 where he had responsibility for the North West of the Province and then managed the Personnel and Training Departments. In 1986 he was promoted to Deputy Chief Probation Officer and in May 2000 was appointed as the first Chief Executive to the Board. He retired in April 2003.

The Hon James Butler

Son of RAB Butler and founder Trustee of The Butler Trust, the Hon James Butler was Deputy Chairman of The Trust from 1992-96. He then became Chairman for five years in 1996. He was a freelance TV Producer and Director for current affairs, business and documentaries. He was Chairman of the Arts Committee and Member of the Council University of Essex for 10 years (1983-1993). He now resides in Paris and his other responsibilities include: Vice President of PHAB (Physically Handicapped Able-bodied) and Member of Court.

Mr Malcolm Butler (Treasurer)

Malcolm Butler, grandson of RAB Butler, has been Treasurer of the Trust since 2001. He is a partner at, and helps run, a Fund Management company in central London. He was previously at Citigroup, for over fifteen years, where as Managing Director he was CFO of the Transaction Banking businesses and latterly ran the Securities and Funds Services Business. He initially worked as Head of Liquidity management, and was Treasurer of Citi’s Nordic division, before moving to help run Citibank’s proprietary trading business operating out of London and New York. Malcolm has previously been a school governor and treasurer. He became interested in criminal justice when invited to join his uncle, Sir Stephen Tumim in his capacity as Her Majesty’s Inspector of Prisons, on several prison visits. He is married with five children.

Professor Nelarine Cornelius

Nelarine Cornelius is Professor of Human Resource Management and Organisational Studies, the School of Management, University of Bradford. She was previously Reader, Brunel Business School, where she held a variety of posts, including Director of the Centre for Research into Emotion Work (CREW) and Head of the Organizational Behaviour and Employment Relations Research group. Visiting posts that she has held include Senior Honorary Research Fellow, Kings College Hospital Medical School, Visiting Professor, Faculty of Management, McGill University and she is currently Visiting Researcher at the Gestion Scientifique at the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris. She has conducted research and consultancy in the areas of strategic human resource management, management and organisational development for a variety of national and international organisations including Kent Police and Prison Service (in the areas of inequality, fairness and flourishing). She has previously worked in the area of management and organisational change and human resource management at General Motors and in local government.

Mr Trevor Grove

Trevor joined the Trust as a Trustee in 2006. Trevor is a journalist, author, and magistrate and currently chairman of the prisoners' newspaper, Inside Time. After Oxford, he worked for the Spectator, the Evening Standard, the Observer, became deputy editor of the Daily Telegraph and editor of the Sunday Telegraph. The experience of serving as a juror on a long Old Bailey kidnap case prompted him to write a book called The Juryman's Tale, an insider's view of how juries work which figures prominently on the reading-list for trainee judges. This was followed by The Magistrate's Tale, an account of his first two years as a JP and a celebration of the layman's role in our criminal justice system.

Mrs Linda Jones CBE

Linda Jones became a Trustee in September 2001 and currently chairs the Awarding Panel. She has been with the National Probation Service since 1974 and has worked in four different areas: Inner London, Northamptonshire and Suffolk. During her career Linda has served on numerous national committees including the Parole Board, the Residential Services, Crime Prevention and External Relations committees of the Association of Chief Officers of Probation (ACOP), which she also chaired for a year. Linda was seconded to HM Prison Service from 1998 –2001 to head the Women’s Policy Group. She is now Regional Offender Manager for the East Midlands Region.

Mr Tony Pearson CBE (Deputy Chairman)

Tony Pearson retired from the Prison Service as Deputy Director General in 1999 after a career spanning 37 years in the Service. He governed several prisons across the country, before becoming Deputy Chief Inspector of Prisons in 1985. He was Head of Industrial Relations and then Head of the Directorate of Telecommunications at the Home Office before being appointed Area Manager for the London North Area in 1991. He was a Member of the Prison Board for the next four years prior to becoming Deputy Director General. After retiring he joined The Butler Trust as a Trustee in October 1999 and was appointed Deputy Chairman in 2001. He also served a term as Chairman of the Sifting Panel.

Lady Slynn of Hadley

Odile Slynn has been a Trustee since 1993 and served four years as Chairman of the Trust’s Awarding Panel (1999-2003). Formerly a nurse and then a teacher, she joined the Order of St John when she retired in 2000. She was a member of the Board of Visitors at HMP Grendon/Spring Hill for 16 years (1981-97), presiding as Chairman for the last three years. She was also a Member of the Local Review Committee for four years and Member of the Parole Board for a further four years. She is currently a Trustee of the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) and Chairman of CINI UK Ltd (Child in Need Institute).

Mr Terry Waite CBE

Terry Waite has been a Trustee of The Butler Trust since 1986. In 1980 he became Advisor to the Archbishop of Canterbury and he caught public attention in the early 1980’s when he successfully negotiated the release of several hostages from Iran and Libya. In January 1987 Terry was himself taken hostage in Lebanon, where he remained in captivity for over five years. Since his release in September 1991 he has engaged in study, writing, lecturing and humanitarian activities. He has written two best-sellers and has been in constant demand as a lecturer, writer and broadcaster. Some of his responsibilities include: President of the UK Emmaus Movement for the Homeless, Chairman of the Prisons Video Trust, Member of the Advisory Council of Victim Support and Patron of Strode Park Home for Disabled-Hospital Broadcasting Trust.

The Reverend John Wates

John joined The Butler Trust as Trustee in June 2002. John served as a Magistrate for South East London (Croydon) between 1981-2003 and represented magistrates on the Croydon Drug Action Team. He is council member for the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and has been a Trustee of the Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust for ten years. John served a term as Chairman of the Wates Foundation, was a supervisory Board member of The Wates Group and is Director of John Wates Promotions Ltd (classical record production). He has been a Trustee of a number of charities and was a Council member of the Association of Charitable Foundations for eight years. John has been a Reader in the Church of England for 20 years and was ordained a minister in September 2003.
